Are You Looking for Insurance for Your VW Karmann Ghia?
Classic Auto — Insuring Your Vehicle, Ensuring Your Passion
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is an affordable and breathtaking vehicle that first became available to the public in 1955. Although Volkswagen only produced the vehicle until 1974, the sporty Karmann Ghia has solidified its place as a unique, stylish iteration in the history of coupes and convertibles.
If you have the privilege of owning one of these stunning vehicles, you need more than just standard car insurance — you need premium classic car insurance that will keep your vehicle on the road for as long as possible.
Volkswagen Karmann Ghia – Sports Car Spirit at a Volkswagen Price
The Karmann Ghia offers the affordability and energy efficiency of a Volkswagen Beetle while also providing drivers with a stunning sports body.
Although Volkswagen manufactured the vehicle, notable sports car designers heavily influenced its style. The German coachbuilder Dr. Wilhelm Karmann approached the Italian sports car design company Carrozzeria Ghia for assistance with the vehicle. Dr. Karmann’s factory, Carrozzeria Ghia, and Volkswagen produced a one-of-a-kind sports car that was far more accessible to the public than standard sports vehicles.

Agreed Value Not Stated Value
When creating your unique plan, we’ll collaborate with you to determine your vehicle’s value. In the event that you total your classic car, you’ll receive compensation based on that agreed-upon value minus your deductible.
Classic Auto Insurance – Offering Peace of Mind at Affordable Rates
Our policies offer highly unique benefits designed to protect your one-of-a-kind Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Our policies include an “Inflation Guard” feature so that your classic car is never underinsured. Every quarter, we automatically increase your car’s coverage through “Inflation Guard.” That way, you never need to worry about your car becoming underinsured.
Flexible Plans and Rollover Miles Keep You Rolling Along
When creating your perfect policy, we offer three different mileage plans: 1,000, 3,000, and 6,000. Here at Classic Auto Insurance, we know that plans can change, and you may not have the opportunity to drive your Karmann Ghia as much as you thought in a given year. Fortunately, you don’t need to worry about purchasing a plan with too many miles because any unused miles you have at the end of your policy year will roll over to next year.
Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Roadside Assistance – Only a Call Away
In addition to all of these great benefits, our policies also include roadside assistance, and we even provide nationwide flatbed towing! When you’re on your way to a car show or simply enjoying your breathtaking car on the open road, you shouldn’t have stress about experiencing car trouble. If your classic car ever breaks down while you’re on the road, you can count on us to pick up your vehicle.
The History of the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia
In the 1950s, Volkswagen was experiencing great success with their VW Beetle, but they wanted to offer the public a car with more flair and style. Volkswagen enlisted German coachbuilder Dr. Wilhelm Karmann, but they didn’t approve Karmann’s initial design proposals.
In Italy, Gian Paolo Boano, who was the son of Carrozzeria Ghia designer Mario Boano, obtained a VW Beetle. Workers at Carrozzeria Ghia removed its original body and replaced it with a coupe. The automotive creators at Ghia had originally designed the coupe for Chrysler, but Chrysler never produced their design.
Karmann approached Carrozzeria Ghia for assistance with the new Volkswagen design, and VW executives approved Carrozzeria Ghia’s custom VW coupe body that they originally created for Chrysler.
Although the vehicle boasted a sporty design, Volkswagen equipped the car with a 1.2-liter, flat-four engine with 36 horsepower, which was the standard engine for the VW Beetle. It had a curbside weight of only 1,750.
In Karmann Ghia’s first year, Volkswagen sold 10,000 models. Two years later, Volkswagen introduced the convertible iteration of the vehicle. Although the car sold well, Volkswagen discontinued it in 1974 in favor of their new VW Scirocco.
From 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen only constructed around 365,000 Karmann Ghia coupes and around 80,000 Karmann Ghia convertibles, making them a highly rare and sought-after vehicle today.
