If you’ve been a car enthusiast for any amount of time, chances are you heard the recent news of the passing of Tom Magliozzi, one of NPR’s most famous personalities. Tom and his brother Ray were the famous duo on Car Talk, a weekly celebration of all things “car”. They hosted as “Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers”, and listeners marveled at their humor, knowledge, and enthusiasm for life.
Tom passed away early last week, at the age of 77. He suffered complications from Alzheimer’s disease. NPR and all of their listeners will miss the advice Tom and Ray gave, as well as the banter they entertained with for many years.
What set these brothers apart from the crowd was not only their enthusiasm and energy, but the fact that they both graduated from MIT, and Tom completed doctoral work in marketing. Tom and Ray opened a small repair shop when they were starting out, and their radio gig fell in their laps by accident. They were invited to participate in a panel of car mechanics on a local radio show, but when Tom was the only one to show up, and they had a huge audience response, they asked him to return the following week. Things only got bigger from there.
