The Porsche 911 has been turning heads since the 1965 model went on sale in fall of 1964. This two-door sports coupe replaced the manufacturer’s first production automobile, the Porsche 356. Originally, the 911 was to be named the 901 after the internal project number, but naming restrictions in France required the middle digit to be replaced.
Porsche 911 models feature a rear engine and independent rear suspension. The engines were air-cooled until 1998 when a water-cooled engine was introduced, inherited by the Volkswagen Beetle. Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of the Porsche automobile company, started as a designer for Volkswagen and was lead designer of what became the Beetle.
The Porsche 911 has been successful in various auto competitions including racing and rallying. It also has garnered much attention for its sports car appeal. ‘Automobile Magazine’ listed the Porsche 911 in the number two position in its list of “100 Coolest Cars” in April 2009 (see the full list here). The elegance, speed, and timeless styling of the 911 make it a favorite among classic luxury car collectors.
