Over the past several years, many famous vehicles have been sold from one celebrity car lover’s collection.
Those who were fans of Steve McQueen knew he was not only a car lover and skilled driver on the silver screen, but also in real life. Some of his cars have sold for millions of dollars, and others not so much. But collectors everywhere are swooning over the variety and depth of McQueen’s collection.
Among his garage-dwellers was a 1963 Ferrari 250 GT. This car was valued at $460,000 and sold at Christie’s in Monterey, CA in 2011 for $2.3 million. Another favorite of McQueen’s was his 1946 Indian Chief vintage motorcycle. This bike sold at Auctions of America in Burbank, CA in 2013 for $143,750, more than five times its estimated value.
Another favorite among his collection was the 1970 Porsche 911 SS, with an estimated value of $72,000. This car sold at RM Auctions in Monterey, CA in 2012 for $1.4 million. His 1953 Hudson Hornet made an appearance at RM that year as well, and it sold for almost triple its estimated value.
Celebrity-owned classics are not always sold for what you might think. In fact, over the history of car sales, celebrity ownership rarely affects the sale price of the car, with the exception of Steve McQueen and Elvis’ vehicles.
