There are numerous essential elements to consider when restoring a classic ride like a Chevy 10 Truck. Of course, there’s the vehicle’s body and paint, engine and mechanical parts, electrical systems, and interior. All of these details require tremendous care to complete a high-quality restoration. In addition to these components, you need to find ideal wheels and tires for your restoration.

Automotive expert Rick Drewry knows a thing or two about finding the best wheels and tires for a restoration project. He and a team of motorheads worked tirelessly on restoring a Chevy C10 truck. The project was an immense success, and he and his team showcased the gorgeous vehicle at various car events. Rick also cataloged great automotive tech tips along the way, including fitting wheels and tires to a restored vehicle.

Finding the Right Wheels and Tires

The importance of choosing the right wheels and tires for a restoration project cannot be understated. These essential components are often the first thing that car lovers notice about a vehicle, and, more importantly, the wheels and tires dictate your vehicle’s driveability.

Your wheels and tires are arguably the most important parts of your vehicle, as they work in tandem with other elements to determine your ride’s acceleration, turning range, and brake functionality. Of course, your wheels and tires will also impact your vehicle’s traction, an invaluable part of your car’s safety, stability, and overall performance.

A central question in the Chevy 10 truck restoration project was what wheels and tires were optimal. Rick Drewry and his team pondered both the size and design of the truck’s wheels and tires, aiming for exceptional driveability and style.

When choosing your set of wheels and tires, you need to prioritize functionality and safety, but you certainly don’t want to skimp on finding the ideal style for your cherished ride. Your tires and wheels are part of what gives your vehicle unique character, determining its stance as well as its overall aesthetic appeal. Picking larger wheels with low-profile tires may give your vehicle a sportier personality while smaller wheels with high-profile tires can convey a more rugged look.

Researching and Measuring Wheels and Tires

Perhaps the first step you should take when searching for wheels and tires for your ride is measuring your vehicle’s wheel wells. You don’t want to risk bottoming out and damaging your car or truck’s components. For that reason, you’ll need to measure your wheel well’s width and depth.

After you’ve measured your wheel wells, you can read up on tire manufacturers’ sizing charts to pick your ideal tires. It’s important to be diligent when researching tires because manufacturers often have differing tire dimensions. Once you’ve determined your ideal tires, you’ll need to figure out the maximum backspacing for your wheels.

Chevy C10 Truck Wheels and Tires

Rick Drewry and the rest of the team working on the Chevy C10 truck considered many different options for this restoration project. They contemplated various color and size options before determining the perfect sets.

Eventually, they decided to provide their stunning Chevy C10 truck with two different tire sizes. They equipped the front of the Chevy C10 with grey 22×9 tires as well as grey 22×11 tires in the back. Rick said that these tires suited the C10’s distinct style and theme.

Rick noted that these were the maximum tire and wheel combinations possible due to the truck’s stock inner fenders. Any larger in the front, and they would have risked bottoming out. This wheel and tire combination ensured the C10 would be driveable while also providing head-turning style – perfect for car shows and classic car events. The tire and wheel sizing enhance the truck’s one-of-a-kind look, further distinguishing it from other classic trucks C10.

The wider tires in the rear provide additional benefits. The added width ensures better traction, potentially enhancing the truck’s torque and acceleration. Rick and his team also split the back’s wheel tubs in half and installed five-inch sections. This will allow the team to install larger rear tires in the future.
