The Indianapolis Star ran a fascinating piece this week on some Indianapolis history and how, in decades past, Indy was at the forefront of the automotive industry. The Indiana Automotive Historical Society is trying to raise awareness for the citizens of Indiana, in an effort to restore some knowledge and some passion about the industry that once was. We won’t rehash the entire article here, but we wanted to share a few of the main points with you and encourage you to go read the article for yourself. We hope more people will be inspired to honor the history of our great city, and continue the tradition of preserving some of these great cars for future generations to see and love.
- In the early 20th century, there were over ninety-one car models being designed and manufactured in Indianapolis. Occurring largely between 1896 and 1937, Indianapolis was the home for the Duesenberg, the Marmon and the Stutz, three pioneering brands in the automotive industry.
- Indianapolis, as most know, was the home of the very first Super Speedway in the United States. The Marmon, one of the classics originally produced in this city, won the very first Indianapolis 500.
- The IAHS is working to sponsor two lectureships and two field trips every year to boost affiliation with the organization, and raise awareness for Indianapolis’ rich history, our landmarks, our car collections, and other historic items.
If you want to get involved with the IAHS, we highly recommend contacting them for more information on how you can participate in the upcoming events!
