First Time at Autorama Brings Great 8 Honor
Everyone dreams of getting a custom classic car or truck into the Ridler Award Great 8 but few do it on the first attempt. That is what Gary and the team from One Off Rod & Custom in Middletown, DE did at the 2017 Detroit Autorama. Clearly, this is no beginner’s luck. The customized classic 1941 Ford F1 Truck is the product of hard work and creative design. We speak with the proud builder about this amazing truck’s path to success. A Custom Transformation Takes Shape
Owner Ed Sears originally wants a daily driver but, as with most custom builds, plans change. Once the ideas start flowing, Ed and Gary realize the truck is destined for bigger things. They chop the top, lengthen the cab, stretch the doors and shorten the bed. The classic pickup gets a fully independent rear suspension and a Ford flathead engine under the hood. Gary decides to do the wiring old school with fuses and braided wire, all stashed beneath the seats. Their ideas begin to take shape.
Setting the Gold Standard
They paint the truck in a rich golden color called Brown Sugar. The team produces the subtle two-toned look by using a darker shade on the fenders and running board and a lighter tint on the body. The paint job is masterfully done. This classic pickup is christened The Gold Standard and it is easy to see why.
A Proud Builder with a Bright Future
Being one of the Great 8 finalists is a monumental achievement for someone just getting started in customizing. While Gary appreciates the honor, achieving his client’s goal was the best reward. “The most satisfying thing was seeing Mr. Sear’s face when he got the Great 8” Gary says. “It made me very proud of the work our team did”. Something tells us that Gary and his crew have a bright future ahead of them. We look forward to their next custom ride.
