2016 Carmel Artomobilia August 26-27
Artomobilia’s Jon Pitz speaks with Phil, an admitted lifelong “car nut,” about the pink 1953 Lincoln he is showing at the 2016 Carmel Artomobilia August 26-27 in the Arts & Design District of downtown Carmel, Indiana.
Choice Sets the Stage for Love
In 1953, Phil’s grandmother is given the choice of a second honeymoon or a new car. Fortunately for Phil, she opts for the new car, a top-of-the-line convertible exactly the way she wants it. “Grammie” drives her Lincoln for 20 years before passing it down to Phil.
Pink Lincoln High School Boy’s Dream Car?
Most high school boys wouldn’t be too thrilled to receive their grandmother’s car for graduation. Phil is different. He grows up riding in that pink ’53 Lincoln. While everyone else wants muscle cars, Phil prefers those that can hold all of his friends (preferably at once). Hand-me-down or not.
Grammie Gets One Incredible Surprise
Phil keeps his beloved Lincoln in storage during his college years, then soon begins a total restoration. After the restoration is complete, he drives the car to Florida to surprise his grandmother. “She ran out of the condo in her bare feet to get a better look,” he laughs. “She kept saying it looked brand new.”
Dad Likes Small Ones, Phil Likes ’Em Big
Phil’s passion for cars is handed down from his dad, who restores motorcycles as well as cars. “Dad liked small sports cars but I like big, slow ones,” he says. Phil starts collecting license plates, which now line the walls of his garage. Each one has a story.
You Collect the Cars You Love
Cruising around in a pink 1953 Lincoln with the top down is Phil’s idea of a perfect day. He knows that you collect the cars you love, those that have meaning for you. Restoring his grandmother’s car was a no-brainer because for Phil, you take care of family – and this pink beauty has earned an honored place in his family.
