Expensive and Exclusive
One of these caged tigers happened to show up at Elite Autos in Jonesboro, AR recently and we blazed a trail to get there and check it out. Built by AMG, Mercedes’ in-house performance shop, this super car is one of the most expensive and exclusive cars the German car giant makes. Only 200 were shipped to the U.S. It is not a car for someone who has trouble writing six figures in the amount column of a check.
At Home on the Racetrack
The Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series is at home on any race track. It has been described as a GT racer with a license plate. With a top speed of 195 mph and 622 hp under the hood, the modified 6.3L V8 engine is naturally aspirated and aurally gifted. This car is a physical experience to drive. You need to be wide awake to be behind this wheel.
Lighter and Faster
Mercedes engineers felt the need to lighten the load on this car as much as possible. The Black Series is 154 lbs. lighter than the standard SLS. The overall construction is a mixture of exotic materials from the aluminum space frame to the titanium exhaust system. Carbon fiber reigns supreme from the long front hood to the “rib wrapper” seats. Gone is the standard battery, replaced with a lighter lithium ion model. Everything was re-designed to decrease weight and increase speed.

The Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series is one step removed from being a race car. Modeled after the SLS AMG GT3, winner of the 24 hours of Dubai endurance race, the Black series is stiff and unyielding on city streets. The throttle jumps to life at the slightest touch which could be unnerving in city congestion. Encounter even the slightest bump in the road and this ride may leave a mark. But stop and go traffic is not a part of this car’s true nature. Like a tiger, it was meant to be set free.
