Classic Car Spotlight: Evolution of the 1967 Volvo 1800S

Classic car enthusiasts in Washington value high-quality models that have stood the test of time. One exceptional vehicle that has made a name for itself in the classic car hobby is the 1967 Volvo 1800S. 

The idea for this historic car began in the mid-1950s. Volvo wanted to extend beyond its reputation for constructing reliable family vehicles. The company aimed to construct an impressive sports car that would appeal to American consumers.

Volvo’s first attempt at constructing a sports car proved to be a learning experience, as their fiberglass-bodied P1900 suffered from serious quality issues. The company had to shut down construction on the P1900 before the car even reached the public. 

From there, Volvo sought to rectify its mistakes and got to work on what would eventually become the Volvo 1800S. Volvo hand built the initial prototype in 1957 and called it the P1800. Volvo first attempted to involve the German coachbuilder Karmann to help construct the car, but Karmann was forced to decline due to their relationship with Volkswagen. Volvo then contracted Jensen Motors to construct the first examples. The first Volvo P1800 production model appeared at the 1960 Brussels Motor Show.

After the P1800’s Belgian debut, the car suffered from quality-control issues at the hands of Jensen Motors. Volvo halted production after Jensen constructed nearly 6,000 units. They then moved production of the sporty new car to their home base in Gothenburg, Sweden. They also changed the car’s name to the 1800S, beginning with the 1963 Volvo 1800S. The Volvo 1800S boasted a sleek, modern style with fashionable fins, glimmering chrome accents and smooth contours. The car conveyed elegance as well as a sporty, aerodynamic appearance. 

Volvo improved upon the P1800 by upgrading its engine by eight hp. They equipped the vehicle with a Volvo 1.8-liter B18 inline-four engine, which sported 100 horsepower. Volvo mated the engine to a 4-speed manual transmission that sent power to the car’s rear wheels.

1967 marked another important year in Volvo’s history, as the automaker made additional improvements to the 1800S, including both style and specification updates. Volvo improved the engine to sport 115 bhp, and they made the car sleeker with an updated side trim. Finally, the automaker equipped the car with an even more attractive grille, culminating in a car that is still celebrated today.
